D2R2 Desensitize, Decongest, Repurfuse, Restore – Get Better

D2R2 – Is the basic mode

l to treat clients and help them get to their goals it is done with 4 basic guidelines.

Desensitize, Decongest, Reperfuse, Restore

Desensitize is completed to help lower the pain in an area. This is done because sometime these areas can become overly sensitive to stimuli and need to get the pain turn down a bit. We can do this through targeted manual therapy (massage like things) to move the tissues and let the body know that it is safe to move and the pain signals are larger than they need to be. You can also do this yourself with tools like lacrosse balls, foam, rollers, kettlebells, as well as many other tools. We also need to look at other health factors such as your stress level, sleep quality, nutrition, activity level, occupation, family needs, long term plans, how well you breath, as well as other factors.

Decongest is used to help clear out the junk and get good fresh blood and fluid into areas to help speed healing and recovery. This can be done by simply moving the body to pump fluids out of areas. If you are too congested to move without pain we have passive activities like compression sleeves by Normatec, an electrical stimulator by MarcPro, VooDoo bands by The Ready State, scraping tools (gua sha), gravity based decongestion (legs up a wall) and breathing. All of these things use slightly different avenues to achieve the goal of clearing swelling so that the body can repair normally. If an area of your body is swollen, it is congested and needs help to clear fluids to heal as quickly as it can. This can be done post injury, post workout, or after a surgery. Several studies have shown that by clearing inflammation healing times can be halved. Imaging shortening a recovery time from 12 weeks to 6, or a chronic problem that has been nagging for a long time clearing out in a few visits. You’ll be amazing how much better you feel when you clear swelling. This is something I like to do after long workouts or extended periods of sitting like flying on a plane or driving cross country.

Reperfusion is the partner to decongestion. Once the waste products from the healing and injury you have going on is cleared, you need to then push fresh fluids into the area. This can be done with several of the techniques described in decongestion (BFR, voodoo, scraping, etc), but it can also be done with targeted functional exercise and aerobic activity. Keeping you in a pain free threshold will help the body pump blood and fluid to and from the area to help restore health and get things moving the way you want them to. Here we hit on body mechanics and movements as well, and you start to see how each stage of this treatment philosophy builds on itself to help you become a stronger more effective person, wherever you, you can be more.

Restore – Once the tissues have recovered from the previous 3 stages, we work on ensuring full ranges of motion are available, body mechanics are on point, exercises and activity levels are appropriate for where you are in your recovery. We work on increasing weights, speed, and momentum of activity to ensure you are confident in your ability to move in functional patterns, pain free, and get to do the things you want and need to do.  Clients spend more time in this area because we are working to rewire their nervous systems to keep things working the way they want and get out there doing more of what you want to do.

These categories of recovery are used in conjunction with each other as a client progresses to get them doing the activities they want faster.
